What to Wear in Paris in Spring

Paris is magical in the spring! Strolling along the Seine, indulging in delectable pastries, breathing in the perfume of blooming flowers.… Nothing could be better! The only thing missing from this scene? The perfect outfit! Parisians are masters of balancing comfort and elegance, making for a sense of style that exudes confidence, ease, and class.

As a foreigner myself, I often find it difficult to achieve that effortlessly chic look that seems so simple to emulate. The fickle spring weather also poses a particularly difficult challenge. But worry not–  it is achievable! With a few versatile, high-quality basics in your wardrobe, you’ll be dressing like a Parisian in no time!

Layers

Layering is key when tackling unpredictable weather and changing temperatures. From trench coats to blazers, there are many ways to adapt your outfit and maintain that trademark Parisian casual elegance.

Trench Coat

No Parisian wardrobe would be complete without the iconic trench coat, a timeless staple of Parisian style. It’s a favorite for a reason– lightweight and water resistant, the trench effortlessly blends practicality and elegance through all seasons.

You’ll never have to worry about navigating ever-changing Parisian weather, and it suits every occasion. Whether strolling along bustling city streets or dining at an upscale bistro, a trench coat is never out of place!

Classic lengths are always in style, but for a trendier look in warmer weather, opt for a cropped trench coat. Every bit as chic as the traditional silhouette, a shorter cut adds an updated, contemporary feel.

If you want an authentic French trench coat of your very own, Sézane is a high-quality brand whose trench coats are 100% organic and produced in the EU.  With a variety of styles and colors available, Sézane trench coats have something for everyone!

Leather Jacket

I don’t know what I would do without my leather jacket. Both comfortable and casually sophisticated, it’s my go-to on cooler spring days. I wear it with everything!  Easily paired with jeans or a dress, this versatile layer complements and elevates any look. GQ’s guide to caring for your leather jacket will keep yours pristine.

Enhance this classic jacket with studs or zippers to showcase your individuality and transform a classic wardrobe staple into a statement piece, like this Maje biker jacket. If you’re looking for something trendier, this BA&SH suede jacket just might be the perfect alternative.

Cardigan

A cardigan is another must-have for transitional weather. Lightweight and easily stowed in a bag, cardigans are a perfect layer come rain or shine. And they’re cozy and stylish, too– what’s not to like?

From strolling along the Seine on cool evenings to admiring masterpieces in chilly art galleries, a cardigan has you covered.

I always bring one with me when I’m out and about in the city, because you never know when the temperatures may drop or even when you might need a little bit more sun protection around your shoulders.

This Maje wool-blend cardigan is perfect for spring– it’s durable, breathable, and warm, without feeling too heavy on a warmer day. Plus, it will give a touch of flair to show off your Parisian elegance.

Blazer

A blazer is yet another versatile layer ideal for adding a bit of polish to any spring wardrobe. With a more professional feel, it will upgrade your everyday style and provide a little extra warmth in cooler temperatures.

I love to style mine with jeans and a t-shirt for a touch of elegance in an otherwise relaxed look. Or you can opt for a patterned blazer to add a pop of color and dimension to your outfit.

This chic Sézane blazer is stunning, a wonderful compromise between sophistication and comfort.

Tops

Now that we’ve covered layers, the next step is choosing the right tops. Here are a few quintessential Parisian styles for every occasion:

Blouse

Understated and chic, a blouse will polish any outfit. Pairing seamlessly with both sweaters and jackets, it is also a good, versatile layer to have on hand.

For a dressier, more elegant look, try this silk blouse from Maje. With flowy fabric and a relaxed fit, it’s an easy way to take your wardrobe to the next level.

T-shirt

T-shirts are great for layering, making them ideal for spring’s unpredictable weather. Not to mention, they’re casual and comfortable– both important to dressing like a Parisian!

And no, it’s not just a stereotype– Parisians really do wear a lot of stripes. The classic striped shirt, or mariniére, is a staple of any Parisian wardrobe, adding a touch of timeless elegance to even the most casual look. This striped shirt from BA&SH is a perfect example.

If you truly want to embody Parisian style, remember that Parisians always prioritize well-fitting, high-quality styles, often in neutral colors. This way, you’ll prevent your “effortlessly elegant” wardrobe from sliding  into “slouchy and underdressed” territory– an easy mistake to make.

Sweater

For both cozy comfort and chic style, sweaters are essential in cooler weather. On lazier days, a sweater is an effortless way to look both relaxed and put-together.

This 100% cashmere sweater from Zadig & Voltaire is so soft, and since it was made entirely from recycled materials, it’s good for the environment as well. You really can’t beat that!

When the days get warmer, switch to a light-weight knit top for refined ease.

Trousers

When striving to achieve the coveted Parisian trademark “effortlessly chic” style, a good pair of pants will make all the difference. The key is to focus on both quality and comfort to maintain a sense of elegance even when spending a whole day exploring.

Jeans

As someone who loves to dress casually and still attain a bit of Parisian flair, I practically built my wardrobe around denim. A good pair of jeans strike a balance between comfort and style.

With a more relaxed feel, they are great for walking or biking anywhere in Paris. Even when conquering the steep steps of Montmartre, my jeans keep me feeling comfortable. With the right accessories, they effortlessly transition to a more sophisticated atmosphere, making jeans ideal for all occasions.

To capture Parisian chic, aim for classic styles like a straight leg or bootcut. For an updated option, barrel jeans are trending this season.

Choose high-quality denim and you can pair these with anything from chic blouses to a pair of sneakers. BA&SH has a fantastic selection which are comfy, stylish, and sustainably produced. I especially love their Aommie bootcut jeans!

Suit Trousers

For a more refined look, a tailored pair of trousers is essential. They offer a touch of professionalism and sophistication without sacrificing comfort or ease of movement.

While attending a ballet at the opera house recently, I found my trousers to perfectly blend elegance and practicality. Whether attending an upscale event or visiting a chic café, tailored trousers are your key to an effortlessly stylish look.

High-waisted styles like these Maje suit trousers offer a flattering silhouette and elongate the legs. Above all, choose high-quality, well-fitting pieces.

Skirts and Dresses

Skirts and dresses both offer a pleasant blend of practicality and flair which is perfect for springtime in Paris.

I would recommend a midi-length for maximum versatility, but longer styles and mini skirts alike are popular choices as well.

Skirt styles:

  • Mini skirts
  • Pleated skirts
  • Slip skirts
  • Wrap skirts

Dress styles:

  • Slip dresses
  • Shirt dresses
  • Belted dresses
  • Little black dresses

If you’re unsure of where to look, Sézane has so many great skirts and dresses to offer. I’d particularly recommend the Ameline slip skirt, the Lana wrap skirt, and the Raquel belted dress. Pair either of  these with sneakers for a more casual daytime outfit or with boots or heels for evening elegance.

Flowy silhouettes are trending this season, and crocheted fabrics offer a “boho chic” aesthetic while retaining that essential Parisian ease.

Shoes

Paris is pedestrian-friendly, but its hills and cobblestone streets mean that proper footwear is a priority. Whether touring the sites or taking it slow in the gardens, always be sure to choose shoes which are practical as well as stylish. Don’t let sore feet or blisters stop you from enjoying Paris to the fullest!

Sneakers

Take it from me, sneakers are your best friend for all your Parisian adventures. Whether with jeans, dresses, or trousers, Parisians wear their sneakers everywhere, especially white sneakers.

All styles and brands are perfectly acceptable, and you’ll fit right in with the locals! These are versatile footwear which, if styled intentionally, can suit just about any occasion and keep your feet blister-free. My favorites are Veja sneakers, because they are comfortable even after a full day of walking and, perhaps more importantly, they’re super cute!

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats are a classic Parisian shoe, though I have noticed that they are less prominent on Parisian streets than they have been in the past. Mary Janes are a popular variation of this timeless staple, mixing vintage charm with functionality.

They may also not be as comfortable as sneakers for walking long distances or on cobblestoned streets. However, ballet flats and Mary Janes remain great options for adding elegance and sophistication for dressier events.

On warmer days, you can also opt for a woven-patterned flat or a chic sandal.

Repetto ballet flats are renowned in France, and the brand is partnering with Anthropologie to make some of their shoes available in the States. Though the selection is limited, it is definitely worth checking out!

For a wider variety, Sézane ballet flats and mary janes are so cute, and come in a lot of different patterns and styles, from patent to woven raffia.

With these basics, you’ll master the art of Parisian spring style while looking and feeling your best. Accessorize with a cross body or tote bag, sunglasses or an umbrella, and simple jewelry.

Just remember the key facets of Parisian style: timelessness, quality, versatility, and comfort, and you’ll be ready for anything.
